Is your water hard or soft ?

Do you know if the water at your house is hard or soft ? Did you know this can make a HUGE difference with whether or not your hair feels dry with split ends or soft and healthy ? I have a few clients ( you know who you are ) who live in the same suburb and their hair has been dry and frizzy. So I decided to do a little research on the ph balance and hardness of tap water. The hardness of the water in my suburb is 29. The hardness of their water is 55. So almost double explains the dryness and split ends in their hair. Obviously I'm not an expert on reading water quality analysis reports but I can tell you that the numbers don't lie ;)

So moral of the story is: Check your area to see what kind of water you have. If you DO have hard water and you notice it drying out your skin and hair, you can do the following:

1. Don't wash your hair as often. Yes I live by this rule. Maybe a little too much ;)

2. Buy a water filter for your shower. We buy water filters for our drinking water, why not buy one for your hair and skin ? This water filter is reasonably priced and has AMAZING reviews.

3. Use a shampoo and conditioner that is meant for helping hard water hair. I personally have not tried this Malibu line, but have heard great things about it. Check it out here

Even though the water isn't terrible where I live I think I am going to buy a shower water filter for my home. Maybe that will lead to a follow up post to hard water.....

Deep conditioner whaaaat ?

If you color/highlight/blow dry/flat iron/ or curl your hair you should DEFINITELY be deep conditioning it. Over time your hair naturally will become more dry and damaged. A deep conditioner will be more moisturizing and powerful then a daily conditioner. I always team up my deep conditioner with a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoo's are great to get rid of the build up on your hair from products and different shampoos and conditioners.

Some of the deep conditioners I have tried in the past year have been :

1. Its a 10 miracle hair mask

2. Alterna bamboo kendi intense moisture masque

3. Pureology essential repair line

4. Davines Nou nou pak

5. Davines nourishing vegetarian miracle conditioner

 6. Davines solu nourishing mask

I pulled out my, almost gone, Davines Solu clarifying shampoo and 4 deep conditioners out of my shower so you could all see what I am using as of right now.

Deep conditioners

My two favorite Clarifying shampoos are Bumble and Bumble Sunday shampoo and Davines Solu shampoo.  My favorite deep conditioner in the last two years is Davines Nou Nou Pak. The biggest perk for me is I don't have to leave it on for 30 minutes. I usually leave it on 5-10 minutes and it gets the job done.  My least favorite deep conditioner is Alterna Bamboo kendi intense moisture masque. Maybe it's just not for my hair type but my hair does not feel fabulous afterwards, and I have not seen any great long-term results. .

So who is going to deep condition their hair tomorrow ? I hope you do ;)

What is Sea Salt Spray ?

I get asked often what "exactly" is Sea Salt Spray ? I'm sure people ask me this question since I use it at least 2-3x a week. Sea Salt Spray is MANY different things for many different hair types. It is a wet spray that:

Sea Salt Primer

Sea Salt Primer

- For curly hair: gives hold to the curl and maintains frizz - For straight hair: spray at roots, followed by a blow dryer will give volume and texture - For wavy hair: give texture and hold. Think beach waves - For straight hair like mine that I curl: amazing texture and slight hold

So if you like your hair "stick straight" with no volume, then this product is not for you. For the rest of you I guarantee if I could get my hands on your hair and style it right you would love it !!

Now lets talk brands; my two favorites are Davines [ No. 14 ] Sea Salt Primer and Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray. Both of these have a gritty feeling to it which gives you that beachy wave feel and look. The other two I have tried are Alterna Bamboo boho style waves and Awapuhi sea spray. I somewhat liked these two but not as much as Davines and Bumble.

Who doesn't want to feel like a beach babe with flowy sexy hair ? I do ;)

Postpartum hair clumps

Everyone talks about Postpartum depression, postpartum body, but does anyone really talk about Postpartum hair loss ?

Let me just first say that it is NORMAL. During pregnancies women do not lose much hair. After having a baby hair tends to just fall out A LOT. Mine was clumps in the shower. It doesn't help that I only have time to wash my hair around 2-3 times a week after having a baby. I kid you not my pile of hair in the shower *may* have looked like a small animal to others in my household. On a daily basis an average woman loses 80+ hair strands a day. Postpartum it is even more. Do not panic, it almost always will grow back. Mine stopped falling out at around 8 months after having my baby. It is now growing back in these tiny baby hairs which look like my 3 year old cut my bangs.

Just for proof here are two photos documenting my hair loss.

This pictures was around 5 months postpartum.

This picture was 10 months postpartum ( this morning )

Another one of those things that people don't share about having a baby. Of course it is all worth it in the end ;)
